Atlanta, Georgia

We made it to Atlanta! At 7 this morning, we left from North Carolina on a rainy drive to the great ATL. We walked through the memorial building that was built for Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. The site was right in the heart of his childhood neighborhood. We walked the same streets as he and the rest of the King family. We saw the homes across the street from his house and even entered into his own home that is still owned by the King family. Afterward, we walked to Ebenezer Baptist Church... the very church that Dr. King and his father and his father before him preached at. We sat in the pews and got to experience what it would be like to be sitting in church listen to Dr. King preach. We learned that the church is still an active church and Dr. King's sister, Christine, still attends the services every Sunday. We even saw a lady we thought could be Christine King.

Today Markietta learned:
"Martin Luther King had two sisters and two brothers and they had two bathrooms in their house."

Today Sharonda learned:
"Martin Luther King was 39 when he got killed. My favorite part of today was when we went in his house."

Tonight we wrapped up the day's lesson on Martin Luther King after a dinner break at TGIFriday's. They all shared what they learned and discussed his leadership and courage. Tomorrow we go to Montgomery to study the Montgomery Bus Boycott and Rosa Parks. To prepare the girls watched "The Rosa Parks Story" and discussed the kind of woman she was to stand up for what is right.

Starlette asks about Rosa Parks:
"Why did she make such a heroic stand?"

Tomorrow, we shall see what 'unburdened her soul though made her feet tired.'

For now, enjoy the pictures from today:
